Heart Disease is the Number 1 killer in Ireland among both men and women.
In 2004 nearly 11,000 (37%) deaths in Ireland , were due to heart disease - cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to 8,000 deaths (28%) due to cancer.
Cardiovascular disease refers to diseases of the heart and diseases of the blood vessel system (arteries, veins capillaries) such as the brain and legs and includes stroke, high blood pressure, heart failure, heart attack and angina.
Deaths from heart disease 19% or 5, 417 people.
Deaths from stroke 7% or 2,085 people
Other diseases of the blood vessels 11% or 3106 people
Deaths from Cancer 28% or 7,717 people
Death rates from heart attack in Ireland are declining due to improved lifestyle, e.g. improved nutrition, less smoking, and better treatment. However rising levels of obesity may quickly reverse this trend.
